Does Sugar Really Cause Cavities? (And Other Dental Myths Debunked)

Every parent wants to protect their child’s smile but with so much conflicting advice online, it’s hard to know what’s true. Do cavities come from sugar? Do baby teeth really matter? And are “fruit snacks” actually healthy?

At First Impressions Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we hear these questions every day. So let’s clear up a few of the biggest myths we hear from parents and replace them with facts that help keep your child’s smile strong.

Myth #1: “Sugar causes cavities.”

The truth: Sugar itself doesn’t cause cavities, but what happens after sugar enters the mouth does.

When bacteria in the mouth feed on sugars and starches, they produce acid that attacks tooth enamel. Over time, that acid weakens enamel and forms cavities.

What matters most isn’t how much sugar your child eats, but how often. Sipping juice or milk throughout the day gives bacteria a steady food supply. The mouth will stay slightly more acidic for longer. Eating treats with meals and rinsing or brushing afterward limits exposure.

Research backs it up: a study found that increasing added sugar intake by just 40 grams per day led to a 6.4% rise in new cavities among children. (CareQuest Institute, 2023).

Myth #2: “Baby teeth don’t matter. They’ll fall out anyway.”

The truth: Baby teeth are small, but their job is big. They hold space for permanent teeth, guide jaw growth, and make eating and speaking easier.

When baby teeth get cavities or are lost too early, neighboring teeth can shift into that space making it harder for adult teeth to come in straight. That can lead to crowding or orthodontic needs later.

More than 50% of children ages 6-8 have had at least one cavity in their baby teeth (CDC). Caring for those “temporary” teeth is a permanent investment in your child’s oral health.

Myth #3: “Fruit snacks are healthier for teeth.”

The truth: While fruit snacks and chewy granola bars sound healthy, they can be sneaky sugar traps. These sticky snacks cling to enamel and feed bacteria long after your child finishes eating.

Better options include fresh fruit, cheese, yogurt, or crunchy vegetables - they help clean teeth and stimulate saliva, which naturally neutralizes acid.

Pro tip: Encourage kids to drink water after snacks to rinse away sugar and food particles.

Myth #4: “If my child brushes often, they don’t need to floss.”

The truth: Brushing only cleans about 60% of the tooth surface. The tight spaces between teeth (where the toothbrush can’t reach) are where many childhood cavities start.

Flossing once daily removes plaque and bacteria that brushing misses. If your child struggles, try floss picks or water flossers made for kids.

Myth #5: “Cavities are only about sugar.”

The truth: Sugar plays a role, but it’s not the whole story. Acidic foods, dry mouth, and even genetics influence cavity risk. Medications, mouth breathing, and dehydration can all reduce saliva, which is your mouth’s natural defense system.

The World Health Organization recommends limiting “free sugars” to less than 10% of total energy intake (and ideally below 5%) to reduce the risk of dental caries (WHO).

What really keeps kids’ teeth healthy

  • A balanced diet with limited sugary snacks
  • Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Rinsing with water after treats
  • Flossing once daily
  • Regular checkups every six months

Cavities are preventable and knowledge is a parent’s best tool. When you understand the real causes, you can protect your child’s smile for life.
