Top 6 Mistakes Parents Make with Kids’ Dental Hygiene (and How to Fix Them)

Even the most caring parents can slip into habits that put kids’ teeth at risk. The good news? Most dental problems are preventable with the right routines. At First Impressions Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we see common mistakes every day and we love guiding families toward healthier habits that set kids up for a lifetime of strong smiles.

Here are the top kids dental hygiene mistakes we see and simple fixes for each one.

1. Letting kids brush alone too early

The mistake:

Many parents hand over the toothbrush and let their child take the lead before they’re ready. But kids don’t have the hand coordination to brush effectively until about age 7–8.

The fix:

Brush together. Let kids practice, but finish the job yourself until they have the dexterity to do it well. Think of it like tying shoelaces. They need coaching until they master it.

Research shows cavities are the most common chronic disease of childhood, five times more common than asthma. Many begin because plaque isn’t removed effectively. (CDC)

2. Skipping flossing

The mistake:

Brushing alone only cleans about 60% of the tooth surface. The other 40%, the spaces between teeth, are where cavities often start.

The fix:

Floss once daily as soon as teeth touch. For younger kids, floss picks can make it easier and less of a battle.

Studies show that adding flossing to brushing significantly reduces the risk of cavities in children.

3. Using the wrong amount of toothpaste

The mistake:

Too much toothpaste can lead to swallowing excess fluoride, while too little doesn’t give enough protection.

The fix:

Follow the “grain of rice vs. pea-sized” rule. For kids under 3, just a smear the size of a grain of rice. For ages 3+, a pea-sized amount is perfect.

The American Dental Association (ADA) specifically recommends these amounts to balance cavity prevention with minimizing fluorosis risk. (ADA)

4. Nighttime bottles or sippy cups with juice or milk

The mistake:

Allowing children to fall asleep with milk, formula, or juice leaves sugars sitting on teeth overnight - a leading cause of early childhood cavities (ECC).

The fix:

Only offer water in bottles or sippy cups at bedtime. If your child is used to milk, try gradually diluting it with water until they transition.

According to the CDC, 1 in 10 children under age 5 already has at least one untreated cavity and many are linked to nighttime feeding practices. (CDC)

5. Skipping regular dental visits

The mistake:

Waiting until a problem appears before visiting the dentist. Cavities and gum problems often don’t cause pain until they’re advanced.

The fix:

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends kids see a dentist by age 1 and every 6 months after. Early visits catch small issues before they become big ones.

Data shows children who start dental visits by age 1 have fewer cavities and lower dental costs over time. (AAPD)

6. Relying on adult products too soon

The mistake:

Some parents give kids adult toothpaste or mouthwash before they’re ready. Adult formulas may have too much fluoride or contain alcohol.

The fix:

Stick with kid-specific, age-appropriate products until your dentist advises otherwise.

Cavities are largely preventable, but the right habits have to start early. By supervising brushing, flossing daily, controlling bedtime drinks, and visiting the dentist regularly, you can dramatically lower your child’s risk.
