Understanding Frenectomy: What Parents Need to Know About Lip and Tongue Ties
When you’re caring for a new baby, there’s no shortage of questions and Google searches. One topic you might come across is lip ties and tongue ties. This is often addressed with a procedure called a frenectomy. But what does that really mean, and how do you know if your child needs one?
At First Impressions Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we’re proud to offer this specialized service led by Dr. Maggie Chicka, who brings extensive training and a gentle, thoughtful approach to every patient.
What is a frenectomy?
A frenectomy is a quick and simple procedure that releases a tight or restrictive piece of tissue (called a frenum) most often from under the tongue (tongue tie) or upper lip (lip tie).
That little band of tissue might seem insignificant, but when it’s too tight, it can affect:
- A baby’s ability to latch and breastfeed properly
- A child’s ability to swallow, speak, or chew comfortably
- Oral development, including spacing between the front teeth
Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) affects about 8% of infants under 1 year. It’s more common in boys, and many parents don’t realize how often feeding issues are involved.
Why it matters for babies and kids
For infants, a tongue tie or lip tie can make feeding stressful for both baby and parent. Babies may struggle to latch, tire quickly during feeds, or have trouble gaining weight. Moms often experience pain while nursing and frustration when feeding sessions feel like a battle.
For older children, unresolved ties may cause:
- Speech difficulties - trouble pronouncing certain sounds
- Feeding challenges - avoiding certain textures or choking easily
- Dental issues - excessive gaps between front teeth or problems with oral hygiene
In a study with nearly 100 mother-infant pairs, 91% of the moms reported improvement in breastfeeding after frenectomy. Nearly half saw that improvement immediately, and most others by two weeks.
How the procedure works
At First Impressions, we use advanced LightScalpel CO₂ laser technology for frenectomies. This allows us to complete the procedure quickly, precisely, and with minimal discomfort. Most babies can nurse immediately after the release, and healing time is usually very fast.
“The LightScalpel laser is fantastic! It allows us to take care of our infant and young patients safely, effectively, and comfortably. It’s been an amazing resource for our patients and our practice.”
Common frenectomy myths
“They’ll outgrow it.”
Not always. Some children compensate, but ties can continue to affect eating, speaking, and dental development if untreated. “Although some mild cases may cause fewer obvious symptoms early on, feeding difficulties are very common. Surgical release has been shown to improve feeding outcomes significantly, often within a week or two.
“It’s painful.”
With today’s laser technology, frenectomies are fast, safe, and virtually painless. Babies often nurse right after the procedure.
“It’s only about breastfeeding.”
Feeding is the most obvious sign, but untreated ties can have lasting effects into childhood.
Why choose a pediatric specialist?
Frenectomies are not merely about removing tissue, they’re about understanding the bigger picture of your child’s growth, development, and emotional needs. As pediatric specialists, our team is trained in:
- Child psychology and comfort techniques
- Pediatric-specific anatomy and oral development
- Communicating clearly with parents through what can feel like an overwhelming decision
After the procedure, many families notice improvement in latch and feeding behavior within 1-7 days.
Next steps for parents
If you’ve been told your baby might have a lip or tongue tie, or if you’ve noticed feeding or speech concerns, it’s worth scheduling an evaluation. Even if a frenectomy isn’t needed, you’ll walk away with answers and a plan you can feel confident about.
